Sarnat Staging (HIE)

Staging for Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy in neonates.

Stage 1 (Mild): Hyperalert, hyperreflexia, sympathetic overactivity, no seizures. Normal EEG. Stage 2 (Moderate): Lethargy, hypotonia, parasympathetic overactivity, SEIZURES present. Abnormal EEG. Stage 3 (Severe): Coma, flaccid tone, absent reflexes, decerebrate. EEG: burst suppression or isoelectric.
